Chapter 22
The Spriteâs Song
Mara awoke the following morning as the sun appeared over the cliffside. The air was unnaturally warm, drying her damp leathers as she sat on her branch. She stared wearily at the forest floor beneath her. The howls of the night before had gone, replaced by loud bird song in the treetops all around. She tapped the dagger at her hip, focusing hard on the bond. It pulsed a tiny bit harder than the day before. She sat upright, excited.
If she could find even one of them, she knew they would be unstoppable. Capable of whatever challenges the island had planned for them. The thought was enough to drive the aches of her body from her mind. She pulled the dagger from her thigh, gripping the blade between her teeth as she descended. She dropped softly to the vine covered ground, crouching on impact, and scanning her surroundings.
There was no movement, save for the softly flowing leaves on trees and hanging ivy before her. It looked markedly more inviting than it had the day before, almost as if it were a new forest entirely. She took a steadying breath, rising slowly and starting forward through the wood.
The further she walked, the more mesmerizing the forest became. She lost sense of time, the sun like swashes of honey through the leaves. The dark trees sparkled with gold in the daytime, glittering dust cascading about her from the whispering leaves. The birds darting about were all different colors, their songs making strange harmonies as they flitted this way and that. She kept seeing rainbows, reflecting off small puddles through the trees and shining dimly across her skin.
Her head felt light, like the way Cyfrinâs smoldering gaze made her feel. Breathless, happily drifting. She was dimly aware that she had fallen on a path, glowing stones leading her through the wood in a softly twisting trail. Music drifted towards her, the hypnotic notes swirling about through the gentle breeze. She closed her eyes, the smell of wildflowers clouding her senses.
The air was warmer here. A strange heat rose in her core like softly burning flame. Mara opened her eyes, face flushed. She had stepped into a beautiful glen, the sunlight above pooling on the stunningly green grass.
This is what she imagined the Beyonds to look like. She stood before a great lake sparkling like rays of starlight as a waterfall cascaded into it from a small cliffside. Its rounded rock face cut through the trees and out of sight. There were thousands of glittering orb lights, pulsing with every color as they swirled through the air around her.
There were people dancing on the grass by the lakeside, across the flower filled green field. No, not just dancing. Flying.
She watched in awe as the stunning figures flew about one another, each with a pair of dazzling wings flittering behind them. The music was so loud here that Mara felt her heartbeat fall into rhythm with it. One of the figures, spinning along through the open air, turned to face her.
